An intrusion alarm can provide valuable protection if installed correctly and used responsibly. An alarm is a major factor when a thief picks a target—most would prefer to go where there is no alarm. Nevertheless, an alarm can never replace good locks, solid doors and lighting.

• Advertise the fact there is an alarm by displaying warning decals.
• Check with several companies before you buy an alarm so you can decide what level of security fits your needs.
• Every family member should learn how to use the system properly. Setting off false alarms will cause people to stop taking it seriously.
• Leave the alarm code with a trusted neighbor and instruct them on how to disarm it, if necessary.
• Your contract should include alarm monitoring and maintenance.

Tips to Eliminate False Alarms

• After setting the alarm, wait to insure it activated itself properly.
• Alarm companies can set up a "double sensor" dispatching, where they will not call police for interior motion activations without having other sensors activated.
• All loose fitting doors and windows with sensors should be tightened. A loose fit may break the senor contact.
• A motion detector can be activated by moveable objects like pets, plants, balloons, etc., or fans that stir the air.
• Have the sensitivity on motion detectors and glass-breaking sensors adjusted so unwanted sounds or items will not activate them.
• Have wide-gap sensors installed on all doors.
• If storms activate an alarm, have it checked and adjusted.
• If the alarm is accidentally activated, the alarm company and Taylor Police should be notified immediately.
• Update alarm systems older than five years old.
