Today’s City of Taylor Podcast (Monday, January 23) centers on the rollout of the City’s new website. The podcast includes Mayor Rick Sollars, Director of Communications and Marketing Karl Ziomek and host Dr. Paul Reeves.

The new website is the result of a yearlong project. Taylor contracted services with CivicPlus, a company headquartered in Manhattan, KS, which has created more than 2,500 municipal websites throughout the United States and Canada.
Unlike the previous Taylor website, this one is “responsive” to the different platforms that it is viewed on. Statistics show that while tens of thousands of customers view www.cityoftaylor.com on a monthly basis, over 70 percent of them are using some type of Smartphone device. The older, static sites did not have the ability to automatically change their configurations to match the platform they were being viewed on; this new technology does just that, and makes for a much more “customer-friendly” experience.
The new website offers a better overall display, improved imagery and more interaction. On the old website, users often had trouble finding certain departments, much less specific information within those groupings. On the new website, you’ll see drop-down screens that are much easier to read, and find it much easier to locate specific areas that you might be seeking. When it doubt, you can click on the “How Do I …” feature at the top of the page.
Anyone who clicks on the City’s URL will be taken directly to a “portal” or “splash” page that features attractive photography and ribbons and photo buttons that can take the customer directly to a certain organization, subsection, department or even subsite. Since some people mistake the City of Taylor for the Taylor Schools, there is now a button on the portal button that can take the viewer directly to taylorschools.net, the district’s website.
In addition to the portal page, www.cityoftaylor.com is divided into a well-organized format including a home page, four subsection pages (golf, recreation, parks and public safety) and a subsite (Explore Taylor, which includes places to see, things to do, residential opportunities, business growth corridors and community initiatives. In addition, there are easy-read posts on restaurant and businesses in the spotlight and even Google map features that can direct you to eateries and retailers in the community).
News articles and event items can be easily found on the home page, where key events (like February’s Daddy Daughter Dances) are also spotlighted.
A feature, “Notify Me,” enables customers to sign up to receive via email things like news announcements, calendar items, special events and even things like bid postings and volunteer opportunities. In Taylor Golf, you can view improved drone flyovers of the City’s two courses as well schedule online and receive alerts via emails.
In public safety, Police Department offer several online services, including vacation checks of homes. The Fire Department even includes its most asked questions right on its departmental page, making it easy for residents to find answers to key questions like outdoor burning, fire inspections, smoke detectors, tours and fire extinguishers.
